Medication for Chronic Constipation in Seniors
For occasional constipation, the following medications can be used:
Medications that will stimulate the intestinal receptors, causing it to move;
Medications that will interfere with the absorption of water from the colon into the blood. Examples include “Magnesium sulfate”, “Salt of Karlovy Vary” and others;
Osmotic preparations – these contribute to the absorption of water from the blood into the intestine, resulting in an increase in the volume of feces. The increased volume of intestinal contents stimulates the receptors of the intestines better, which causes defecation. Such remedies include lactulose drugs like Duphalac, Prelaksan, and Laktuvit. They are a good substrate for the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines that can inhibit the activity of harmful bacteria, and remove ammonia with the fecal mass that is toxic to the brain.
Drugs that increase the intestinal contents by holding water in it (“Fortrans”, “Forlax”) can only be used before ultrasound or x-rays of the intestine, once. They are prescribed by a doctor, who preliminarily excludes heart failure, intestinal obstruction, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis.
Periodically occurring constipation in older people can also be treated with laxatives. They come in several forms:
Laxatives that promote the production of gases in the intestine, which should push the intestinal contents out. These are Evacue, Ferrolax, and Calciolax. They may be used during hemorrhoids and rectal fissures.
In addition to the usual laxatives, modern drugs that strengthen the motility more gently can also be used. They include:
However, note that laxatives can also cause lazy bowel syndrome in the patient. It is also necessary to conduct an examination of the body for diseases that may aggravate the condition of the intestines. Some of these include atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, parkinsonism, neurological diseases, hypothyroidism, and helminthiasis. Without adequate treatment of these diseases, stimulation of the intestinal peristalsis alone might not cure chronic constipation.
